High Fructose Corn Syrup or HFCS is a sugar alternative derived from the enzymatic processing of glucose syrup that is found in corn. Introduced to the United States in the 1970’s, High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) is an inexpensive sugar alternative commonly used in processed foods and artificially sweetened drinks. Currently HFCS is the most commonly added sweetener used in processed foods and beverages including condiments and salad dressings, packaged cookies and baked goods, ice cream, breakfast cereals, soda pop, juice, and even yogurt. Since its introduction, there have been numerous studies and reports trying to determine links between HFCS and diabetes, obesity, liver damage, mercury exposure, and other health ailments.

Though high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is the most common sweetener added to processed foods and beverages, there are growing concerns that consumption may trigger adverse health reactions.
