Flavorings and Extracts
Whenever you want to add a concentrated flavor to a recipe, use a good extract or oil- one that gives you a strong and accurate version of the original taste for which you are looking. To avoid constantly running to the grocery to buy fresh or frozen fruits for that certain flavor, stock up on flavorings, extracts and oils as economical replacements for the originals. Try our Maple, Black Walnut, or Cherry oils for starters.
American Spice carries a wide assortment of oils. Consider the flavoring possibilities!
Ideas for Extracts, Oils, and Flavorings
Extracts and Oils provide different levels of flavor for your cooking and baking needs.
- Extracts are concentrated flavorings somewhat diluted by an alcohol or water base. They are good standbys to use for periodic baking and for recipes that you pull out of the back of the recipe box a couple times a year. Seasonal and holiday cooking lends themselves to using extracts. Try our peppermint extract flavoring. It is not only for making peppermint candy for Christmas, it is a great ice-cream topper and coffee flavoring. Add it to your next hot cup of cocoa and warm up all over with this minty chocolate favorite. Mix flavorings into your next batch of white or chocolate fudge, too!
- Oils work much in the same way as Extracts except they are more highly concentrated due to the limited use of an alcohol or water base. They are usually considered to be 3 - 4 times more potent than extracts which makes them very handy to have around in the cupboard if you are doing a lot of cooking or baking with this flavoring at one time, or on a continual basis. Since oils are so concentrated, you will only need a small amount compared to using an extract, and you will find you may not have to buy oils so often. Our Banana, Strawberry and Peach Oils are always handy in the kitchen. You don’t have to keep the actual fruits around and be concerned about spoilage.
