Salt History
Salt is a traditional flavor enhancer from ancient times. Salt was also used as a cleansing agent, in various religious ceremonies, as a preservative of meats and vegetables, and as barter for other food items and goods. Today, salt is found in most prepared foods we eat.
Salt Uses
Because salt is a staple and essential to human health, there are many different minerals countries add to their commonly used salts in order to improve the health of the overall population; such a fluoride, iron, and folic acid.
Salt is commonly mined and taken from the sea. Mined salt is typically refined in order to purify it by removing the trace minerals that ruin its flavor. Sea salt is commonly thought to be more natural than mined salt; however, since there are many trace minerals found in it that are unsavory, it sometimes too goes through a refinement to remove the unwanted flavors.
